Is Your Sex Toy Body-Safe? A Material Guide

The sex toy industry isn't regulated in most countries โ€” and material labels on Shopee and Lazada are often wrong. Here's what's actually safe, what to avoid, and how to protect yourself.

The sex toy industry isn't regulated in most countries. Intimate products aren't classified as medical devices, which means manufacturers can use whatever materials they want โ€” and there's no one checking the labels.

This matters if you're buying on Shopee, Lazada, or Taobao, where material claims aren't always accurate. About 1 in 5 consumers have unknowingly bought counterfeit intimate products, according to brand protection firm Red Points. If you've ever opened a toy and noticed a strong chemical smell, that's a sign the materials might not be what was advertised.

A 2006 Danish EPA study tested a batch of sex toys and found that some contained up to 70% DEHP, a phthalate plasticizer that the European Chemicals Agency classifies as toxic to reproduction. Phthalates are banned from children's toys in the EU and US, but there are no equivalent rules for adult products.

This is why Sweet Potato Guide rates every product for material safety. It's the first thing we check.

Body Safe (Green Badge)

  • Medical-grade silicone โ€” Non-porous, hypoallergenic, sterilizable. The gold standard. Look for "platinum-cured" or "medical-grade" specifically โ€” the word "silicone" alone means nothing. Every LELO and Lovense product uses this material.
  • ABS plastic โ€” Hard, non-porous plastic used in toy bodies and handles. Completely safe.
  • Borosilicate glass โ€” Non-porous, can be boiled clean, works with any lubricant.
  • Stainless steel โ€” Non-porous, durable. Look for 316L surgical grade.

Use With Caution (Amber Badge)

  • TPE/TPR โ€” Not toxic on its own, but porous. Bacteria can work into the surface even after washing. Common in cheaper products on Shopee and Lazada. The Lovense Max 2 uses a TPE sleeve โ€” we flag this on its product page. Always use a condom over TPE toys.

Avoid (Red Badge)

  • PVC/vinyl โ€” Frequently contains phthalate plasticizers. The Danish EPA study found its highest chemical concentrations in PVC products.
  • Jelly rubber โ€” Cheap, squishy, porous, degrades over time. Extremely common in sub-$20 marketplace products.

How to Protect Yourself

Stick to brands that publish material specs (LELO, Lovense, Satisfyer, We-Vibe). If a Shopee or Lazada listing says "silicone" without "medical-grade," assume it's something else. Buy from authorized retailers โ€” a "LELO" from an unverified seller may not be LELO at all. When in doubt, use a condom over the toy. Check our product pages โ€” every product on Sweet Potato Guide has a verified material safety rating.

FAQ

How can I tell if my toy is real silicone? Real medical-grade silicone is odorless and non-sticky. It doesn't discolor or degrade. A chemical smell out of the box is the clearest warning sign. Buy from brands with published material certifications.

Are cheap vibrators on Shopee dangerous? One-time use probably won't hurt you. But many cheap products mislabel their materials. A body-safe product from a reputable brand starts around $40โ€“60 โ€” the price difference reflects better materials, not just marketing.
